Our story

Our Story
How a rundown fishing shack on a Tasmanian lake became the thing we didn't know we needed.

Camp Nowhere didn't start with a grand plan. It started with a listing, a long drive to the Central Highlands, and a falling-in-love-at-first-sight moment that neither of us entirely saw coming. When we first laid eyes on the old fisherman's shack in Breona, it was...a bit rough. We're talking 1980s bedspreads, fake wood panelling, and two ugly fireplaces . But there was something about it. We couldn't believe the lake view wasn't included in the original listing photos (much to our luck as it would have sold quicker had it been included).

We'd just survived an intense COVID lock-down period in Melbourne with a 8-month old and decided we needed a change. We'd always 'escaped' to Tassie for holidays, adventures, to see friends and for great food and fun. Why not make it home?

The Renovation

What followed was one of the most challenging, rewarding and chaotic experiences of our lives. We rolled up our sleeves and did the bulk of the construction work ourselves, which sounds romantic until you're sourcing your fifth electrician because getting trades out to a remote part of Tasmania, which is literally a nightmare whilst trying to parent a 3-yr old and stay married.

We also discovered that running an off-grid property at 1100 metres above sea level comes with surprises, including buying in water to refill the tank more than once during a dry summer. The Central Highlands doesn't make things easy. Thank goodness for Sarah Andrews and all her guidance, vision and support. We brought her on as the  wanted it to feel warm, curated and a little bit like nowhere else.
We acknowledge the palawa people as the traditional owners and custodians of yingina (The Great Lake) where our beautiful
Camp Nowhere is located. We pay our respects to the elders past and present of lutruwita (Tasmania).
Cared for and nurtured for thousands of years, we acknowledge that sovereignty over this land was never ceded.

Thanks for staying with us—now go back to the real world, and dream of your next visit.
